English as a Second Language
English literacy (ESL) programs offer instruction in speaking and listening, reading, and writing. Learning is linked to the adults’ roles of worker, family member, citizen and lifelong learner. College and Career Readiness Standards for Adult Education, and TABE (Test of Adult Basic Education) ESL competencies, offer a framework for instruction. Computer literacy skills are offered as well. Students must qualify for this program by VISA status.
Recreational English as a Second Language
As an arm of USD 383 (and additionally funded through local monies), services are offered to certain segments of the ESL community. Services are allowable per federal VISA status law but are not subsidized by the AEFLA grant. F and M visas allow spouses to sign up for "a vocational and recreational study.” Students must show proof of their VISA status. ESL classes are designed to provide English language instruction to non-English speaking adults in order to provide the information needed to understand and function in an English-speaking culture.
TOEFL Preparation Courses
TOEFL preparation is offered to students seeking entry to post-secondary education when they already have degrees from their home countries. TOEFL instruction is broken into two sections: Beginning TOEFL and Advanced TOEFL preparation. Beginning TOEFL is a pre-requisite for Advanced TOEFL. The total TOEFL preparation takes 12 weeks of instruction (2 enrollments).
For students interested in learning the skills necessary to qualify for citizenship and complete the
accompanying paperwork, we offer citizenship classes which can break the task into manageable units of work. Actual legal representation to complete the process is not available through the ALC.
